Addiction Treatment FAQs
The following addiction treatment FAQs are questions we frequently receive from clients interested in our treatment programs and centers. More general questions about Crossroads are answered in our FAQ sections for clients, family members, and referrers.
How long has the organization been around?
Crossroads was founded in 1974 and is well-known for its focus on women’s addiction treatment and gender-responsive approach to care. Having been in the industry for so long, the organization has developed a strong reputation for quality care and best practices. Crossroads has adapted to the changing needs of the recovery community and established a solid presence in Maine for addiction treatment, unlike newer facilities that may have less experience.
Are you accredited?
Crossroads is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and NAATP for its residential, outpatient, and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). The organization adheres to national standards in quality and care, maintaining the highest standards.
Are you licensed by your state?
Crossroads holds a state license in all of its programs, which include residential, partial hospitalization, outpatient, and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). Being licensed by your state means you are evaluated annually by the governing state bodies to ensure safety and compliance with all regulations.
Do you accept insurance?
Crossroads is in-network with most major insurances to cover the cost of treatment. Crossroads also accepts self-pay and offers a competitive self-pay rate. Crossroads does accept Maine Care for residential and outpatient services. Through the compassionate generosity of past patients and their families, a limited amount of financial assistance may be available to those who meet the financial needs assessment criteria. To learn more about financial assistance, talk with our admissions staff. Full scholarships are not offered.

What is the difference between in-network and out-of-network insurance?
When organizations are in-network, it means they have a contract with the insurance company with an agreed-upon rate for the level of care provided, such as residential services. In-network contracts have criteria the organizations need to meet to maintain the contract. Out-of-network benefits mean the organization does not have a contract with the insurance company, which often means they set their own rate for billing the insurance company. This typically results in clients receiving a large bill for the remainder of treatment that insurance did not cover due to the high cost charged by the center. Clients may have larger out of pocket deductibles and co-pays with out-of-network plans.
Crossroads is in-network for residential services with most major health insurance plans.
What is the difference between benefit verification checks and insurance authorization?
Prior to entering treatment, your first step is to check your benefits to see if the residential level of care is a covered benefit under your insurance plan and if there is any deductible you will owe prior to admission. Once a clinical assessment is completed and you meet the criteria for this level of care, a Utilization Review Specialist will contact the insurance company to obtain insurance authorization, which is needed to admit you to the program. Insurance Authorization gives the treatment center authorization to admit you and bill the insurance company for the days you are in treatment. Often times insurance re-authorizations will take place weekly during your stay.
Are your programs gender-responsive?
Crossroads is sensitive to the individual needs of women and men and is proud to be able to provide the gender-responsive treatment that many are looking for and respond well to. Gender-responsive treatment allows each gender to focus on the issues that are most prevalent in their lives. Individuals may feel more comfortable when surrounded by others of the same gender and can create stronger connections. They can be open and honest while delving into these topics and developing healthier strategies for coping.
The struggles and challenges that women face are not necessarily the same as those that men face. Our residential treatment programs are designed for a more welcoming, non-judgmental environment for women where discussion and healing can take place. The residential programs at Crossroads are designed specifically for women, with an all-female staff.
What is your staff-to-client ratio?
Crossroads has a staff-to-client ratio of 2:1. Low staff-to-client ratio ensures individualized treatment is occurring and clients are not lost in large groups.
Do you have awake coverage 24/7?
Having 24/7 awake coverage on-premises is important for safety as often times issues may arise in the middle of the night and need staff attention. Crossroads’ residential programs are staffed 24/7, 365 days a year with awake coverage.
Does treatment take place in a separate location you need to be transported to?
At Crossroads, our residential programs provide all clinical treatment in the house where the client resides. The clinicians’ offices are on-site, which allows women to have access to their clinicians when clinical issues arise. Some other treatment programs house clients in one location and then transport them to an outpatient office for treatment. Often times, these facilities are not billing insurance for the residential benefit and treatment consists of an IOP or PHP level.

What is your treatment philosophy?
Crossroads’ treatment philosophy is that substance abuse, mental health, and co-occurring treatment must build upon and respect people’s unique needs to focus on self-determination, choices, positive relationships and connectedness. We believe services must be provided in a secure, non-judgmental, welcoming environment that embraces cultural diversity.
How long will my treatment last?
It depends on your situation. You will first participate in an evaluation and treatment planning process that is specifically geared to your individual needs and goals. You will be given program recommendations and options from a counselor. More information on typical treatment duration can be found in our program descriptions.
Where do I admit to a residential program on the day I begin treatment?
Clients should come to the actual residence at which they will be a client.
I received an OUI. Is Crossroads Driver Education and Evaluation Programs (DEEP) certified?
Yes, Crossroads is DEEP certified to provide evaluation and treatment to adults 18 years of age and older.
Does Crossroads provide access to medical or psychiatric services?
Yes. If medically necessary, staff will support clients in accessing medical treatment should the need arise. When clients present to treatment and already have a psychiatrist and/or medical team in place, we work hard to coordinate with those treatment providers as they will be a critical component to the client’s support system when they leave treatment.
For services within Crossroads, we provide counseling staff with access to medical and psychiatric consultation from our consulting psychiatrist, who is fully accredited through the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Referrals for psychiatric evaluations and medication consultation are available to clients, as well as screening and referral to appropriate medical services for routine and chronic medical conditions.
Is there a waitlist to get into your programs?
We make every effort to get clients into our programs as quickly as possible. Crossroads can typically get a person into outpatient counseling or the PHP or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) immediately. There can sometimes be a short wait for residential programs, but spots are always opening up. If necessary, clients attend the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) while waiting for a residential program spot to open up.
What is your smoking policy?
Smoking is prohibited inside all of Crossroads’ facilities and vehicles. However, Crossroads does allow smoking at designated times during the day and in designated outdoor locations at its residential facilities.
How long will my loved one’s treatment last?
It depends on the situation and which program your family member is in. Your loved one will first participate in an evaluation and treatment planning process that is specifically geared to his or her needs and goals. Program recommendations will be made from there. More information on typical treatment durations can be found in the Crossroads program descriptions.
Will I be able to contact or visit my loved one while they are in residential treatment?
Telephone usage varies by program. Specific guidelines will be explained when your friend or family member arrives at the facility, and when they have settled in they can communicate the guidelines with you. There are specific visitation schedules for each program, which will also be shared once your loved one arrives to treatment.
Is there support for me at Crossroads?
Absolutely. Crossroads offers individual counseling to those affected by a loved one’s addiction. Our focus is on the affected person’s issues and concerns rather than the addicted loved one. Therapy groups for families may also be offered at our outpatient offices. In addition, family members are often encouraged and invited to participate in family programs while their loved one is in residential treatment.
How do I pay for treatment?
Crossroads is in-network with most major insurances to cover the cost of treatment. Crossroads also accepts self-pay and offers a competitive self-pay rate. Through the compassionate generosity of past patients and their families, a limited amount of financial assistance may be available to those who meet the financial needs assessment criteria.
