Recovering from an eating disorder is not easy. But before any treatment can begin, any treatment facility needs to understand what the person dealing with the eating disorder is going through and how their eating disorder has impacted family relationships. So we ask each person entering any treatment to meet with a licensed counselor for an extensive evaluation to help craft an individualized treatment plan. Each counselor has specific training and expertise in eating disorders and other mental health issues. Once the evaluation is complete, the individual and the counselor work together to create a unique regimen to address the specific goals identified as critical for the treatment and rebuilding of relationships. Getting Eating Disorder Treatment
Residential Eating Disorder Treatment
Crossroads provides comprehensive care addressing both eating disorders and substance use disorders if both exist. Areas of need while also promoting improved mental health. This is one of the biggest factors that sets the facility apart: it is not strictly an eating disorder rehab or an addiction rehab, it’s both, and it’s one of the only facilities of its kind in the state of Maine and New England a whole. Treating all issues at once reduces the risk of relapse for all co-occurring disorders.
The residential treatment program immerses women in a safe, structured, therapeutic environment to begin their recovery from eating disorders and addiction. It is an intimate 10-bed program that is ideal for women who need the comfort and support of a structured program that has professional onsite staff 24/7.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
The recommended level of care after a residential treatment program, is a PHP. Crossroads offers a unique treatment therapy program that supports women through their recovery journey. Groups meet Monday through Friday for six hours per day and and is supported by a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians, nurses, dietitians and a psychiatrist.
Like the residential program, it provides women with the support they need for managing eating disorders in a structured manner. They engage in medical nutrition therapy, and group sessions using Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approaches. They can continue building bonds with other women in the program in a safe space. Here, they can explore any obstacles they have faced and celebrate achievements.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
In addition to the residential treatment program, Crossroads also offers an IOP for eating disorders. This program at the outpatient treatment center is ideal for women who are medically stable but still require clinical support and structure to maintain the gains they have achieved in a higher level of care, such as a residential program. Groups meet Monday through Friday for three hours per day and work closely with master-level clinicians and dietitians.

Contact Crossroads About Eating Disorder Treatment
As a leader in the treatment of addiction and behavioral health since 1974, Crossroads recognizes that many women who are struggling with an eating disorder are also dealing with a substance use disorder. In Portland, Maine, the eating disorder treatment center was created to deal with these co-occurring disorders. Both addiction and eating disorders are complex conditions in that there is not a single cause or solution. This can make it challenging for women and their families to find effective ways of managing these issues and begin a healthy path to recovery. Engaging in a fully integrated treatment program that addresses the intricacies of how these disorders impact one another and allow women to explore the challenges they face and find what works best for their needs is essential.
Many of the strategies we use to treat addiction are the same ones we use to treat eating disorders. Therefore, there is a lot of overlap and value in providing comprehensive treatment. Women can take part in a variety of evidence-based treatment modalities, including:
- Motivational interviewing
- DBT
- CBT
- Medical nutrition therapy
- Art and expressive therapy
- Mindfulness-based relapse prevention
