Crossroads Gala: getting women the treatment they need

Understanding that residential addiction treatment is expensive, guests at the Crossroads annual gala Nov. 2 at Westin Portland Harborview Hotel in Portland raised $25,000 for a client scholarship fund that bridges the gap between what a woman can afford and what she needs.

“Without the help of this gala and what came of it, I probably wouldn’t be able to get the treatment I needed, and I’m grateful,” said Jodi Arsenault of South Portland. “I was so broken at the time, I needed to be cocooned in a supportive atmosphere. I went to treatment for 30 days, and thank God that I did. … I didn’t want to drink anymore, and I just couldn’t stop.”

Crossroads has outpatient programs for both women and men, but it’s the cost of the residential programs – offered only to women – that can be prohibitive.

“We’re trying to reduce as many barriers as possible to get women into treatment,” said Crossroads CEO Shannon Trainor.

“Tonight celebrates recovery and that recovery is possible,” said Dr. Mary Anne Roy, chief clinical officer. “It reminds us of the potential of hope.”

Dr. Mary Anne Roy discusses how Crossroads is helping women tackle alcoholism.

“What happens with women is they start using alcohol to take the edge of. Maybe they start using alcohol in a different type of social setting, like play dates, that moms organize with their children. When it comes to alcoholism, the disease isn’t created equal. Women become dependent sooner and get sicker faster compared to men struggling with addiction. Another struggle for women with alcohol use disorder is the stigma and shame that comes with it. If you think you or someone you love may be struggling with an alcohol use disorder, the best thing to do is talk about it and seek help.” – Dr. Mary Ann Roy, Crossroads

Dr. Mary Anne Roy explores why women are at greater risk for opioid addiction.

According to the CDC, opioid prescriptions are written for women more often than men. The same study shows women are more likely than men to use them chronically. Statistically, women get prescriptions for higher doses, behaviors that have cycled for many years.

According to Dr. Mary Anne Roy, “Biologically and physiologically, are bodies are very, very different. Women experience dependency sooner. The challenge sometimes is women perceive these medications as safe because they are being prescribed by a medical professional and they are under the care of a medical professional. Women are willing to talk about pain more freely, and statistically will go to a doctor and seek treatment, where men sometimes put that off. Recovery is a different process. The prescription monitoring program is a good start at reversing this trend, and increasing access to treatment especially for women of, childbearing age.”

Crossroads Opens New Counseling Center

Crossroads cut the ribbon on a new outpatient counseling center in the Shops at Long Bank.

Serving the Kennebunk community since 2009, Crossroads rehab provides gender-responsive outpatient counseling services for men and women and recently moved to a more central location to better serve its patients.

“We were getting so many requests for more services, that we needed to expand and grow, and we needed a bigger space,” said Director of Development and Communication Lesley Rawlings.
