Therapy is an integral part of recovery from addiction. It is important to be able to work through challenges in a safe space and talk with a professional who is well-versed in these matters. To better support clients, families, and the community, Crossroads is launching two new therapy groups beginning in April 2018.
Affected Others Recovery Group – Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. beginning April 11.
Addiction does not just affect the person misusing drugs or alcohol; it impacts the entire family as well as friends and colleagues. When someone you care about is dealing with addiction, it can be tough to cope with and know how to respond. This group provides you with a supportive space to talk with professionals and others who understand and have gone through similar situations. Weekly discussions will focus on:
- Effective communication to create a climate for change
- Learning about the disease of addiction
- Stress management coping skills
- Practical self-care exercises
Men’s Early Recovery Group – Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. beginning April 11.
Ongoing support is essential during early recovery to continue developing and reinforcing effective skills and reduce risk of relapse. Men are encouraged to join this group to learn how to manage cravings, stress, relationships, and more as they create a healthy and stable life in recovery. Weekly discussions will include:
- Managing healthy relationships
- Effective communication
- Dealing with difficult emotions
- Spirituality awareness
Benefits of Engaging in Group Therapy
Whether you are dealing with addiction yourself or know someone who is, group therapy can be a beneficial way of receiving the support you need to continue moving forward. It allows you to connect with others who are experiencing similar situations. They may understand firsthand what you are going through and be able to provide helpful insight. In addition, group therapy can:
- Help you to look at issues from a new perspective. Someone else’s experience may resonate with you in a way you never considered. It can enable you to broaden your view of the situation and be more open to trying new things.
- Provide a network of support. When you are going through difficult times, you have others to turn to who you know will listen and understand. At the same time, it also allows you to give back and be supportive of others. Your own experiences may help someone else, just as theirs helped you.
- Give you a safe space to share, free from judgment. Everyone’s situation is different, but you all have one thing in common: the impact of addiction. You can feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and concerns surrounded by others who know what you are going through, as well as a therapist that can guide the conversation.
Group therapy can be beneficial for anyone who has been affected by addiction, whether personally, or through living in a home where addiction is present or being friends with someone who is struggling. Even if you don’t see yourself as the kind of person who goes to therapy, consider giving it a try. You may be surprised by how much you get out of it when you keep an open mind. Crossroads offers a variety of therapy groups for individuals in recovery as well as family and friends.
