“The disease of addiction isn’t substance based. It’s core based.” ~ Amber A., Crossroads CAMP client
Amber has much to be grateful for these days. December 26, 2014 marked her one-year anniversary of sobriety. She also celebrated her son Chandler’s 1st birthday one month later. After completing treatment at Crossroads’ Children and Mothers Program (CAMP) in March 2014, Amber realized “this baby only has me. If I can take care of him, I know I can take care of myself.”
At 15, Amber was an active high school student achieving success in sports with the dream of attending college on a cross country or basketball scholarship.
“That’s who I was.” Sports and school set Amber’s life goals. The death of her Pepe, her mother’s relapse, and a torn ACL clouded those dreams and led Amber to wander into alcohol use and her drug of choice, bath salts. After leaving an abusive relationship, finding recovery and then relapse and jail, Amber discovered she was pregnant and finally ready to fight this disease. She admitted to Crossroads in January 2014 and immediately resisted the “rules and structure” of CAMP.
A week later, she was giving birth to Chandler and he was all she had. “The structure of the program made me realize I was living a normal life.”
Amber spent 60 days at CAMP learning that, despite having been addicted to alcohol and bath salts, she had the intelligence, courage and strength to live a healthy life for her and her son. “Being at Crossroads gave me purpose, and I wasn’t using. That blew my mind.”
