Women in Harmony is partnering with Crossroads to present “The Strength of Women” at The Cathedral Church of St. Luke at 143 State St, Portland, ME on Friday, May 15th at 7:30PM and Saturday, May 16th at 4:00PM. Sponsored by L.L.Bean, this concert is the second of Women in Harmony’s 2015-2016 Concert Series focused on women and health.
Women in Harmony is a chorus of women’s voices based in Maine. “The Strength of Women” concert will address various aspects of mental health and well-being, including songs about women helping each other get through tough times, women having fun together, women growing into their own identities and women seeking support from other women. The pieces on the program range from contemplative to energetic and from serious to funny. They include such titles as “Away Ye Merry Lassies,” “Mae Frances,” “You’re Not Alone” and “A Cat’s a Teacher.”
Women in Harmony always features music by women artists, composers and arrangers, and its accompanist, Deana Ingraham Gurney. This concert will also feature the New England premiere of “Lineage” by Andrea Ramsey, commissioned for the 11th National Sister Singers Network Festival in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois in July 2014, where 30 Women in Harmony members attended.
Niki Curtis, the Crossroads Alumni Association (CAA) Outreach Officer, will share her experience, strength and hope with audience members during the concert.
Tickets are available in advance ($12) at Longfellow Books and Starbird Music in Portland and Nonesuch Books in South Portland or via Women in Harmony’s website, www.wihmaine.org. General admission is $15 at the door.
The event is handicap accessible and an ASL interpreter will be provided.
