Crossroads for Women recently presented at the NIATx Summit and SAAS National Conference in Boston. Along with The Recovery Center at Mercy Hospital and Youth Alternatives Ingraham, Crossroads presented “Residential Treatment Redesign: Lessons from the Portland, Maine Residential Services Consortium Project.”
Budget pressures in the state of Maine left treatment providers wondering if residential treatment programs would be funded at all in the future. Through a $1 million SAMHSA grant, the three organizations worked on a residential addiction treatment program that unbundled housing and treatment services. This innovative model allowed the consortium of providers to remove some administrative hurdles. However, it also forced program managers to be creative in order to cover costs that weren’t covered by the grant, such as medications.
Presenters included Barbara Dacri of Crossroads for Women, Pat McKenzie of Youth Alternative Ingraham and Burma Wilkins of Mercy Hospital, along with two clients from the program. At the conference, the panel discussed findings from their first attempt at implementing the alternative residential treatment model that they developed.
