The Three-Year Grant Program Aims to Decrease Alcohol and Drug Abuse in Pregnant and Postpartum Women, Improve Birth Outcomes and Healthy Pregnancies, and Increase Family Function and Stability
SCARBOROUGH, Maine (August 29, 2012) – Crossroads, a nonprofit agency offering Maine’s most comprehensive treatment for behavioral health with a gender-specific focus, was awarded $1.5 million over 3 years from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The federal grant will allow Crossroads to enhance Maine’s only residential substance abuse treatment program for pregnant and postpartum women, where children reside with their mothers during their residency.
A National Treatment Model
This unique program enhances Crossroads’ expertise on gender-focused and trauma-informed care. It incorporates family-focused treatment by providing services and intensive case management for the client, her children and members of her extended family. Parenting skills and education are emphasized. The new treatment model also integrates medical services with treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders to promote safe and healthy pregnancies and child and family health and wellness. Maine Medical Center’s Department of Family Medicine is partnering with Crossroads to provide the mothers and their children with medical care.
Crossroads is the only agency in Maine, and one of only 27 in the United States, awarded funding to develop this innovative treatment program. Data collected during the time of the grant will track outcomes to evaluate the merits of this comprehensive approach and serve as a treatment model for other agencies around the country.
Community Partners
To offer such a comprehensive treatment program, Crossroads has partnered with several medical, behavioral health and other service organizations around Maine. In addition to Maine Medical Center, community partners include Family Crisis Services, SMART Child and Family Services, Women Work and Community, and Portland Public Health.
“This funding is significant for women and families in Maine because it gives them access to residential and family services that have not yet been offered in this state,” says Crossroads executive director Barbara Dacri. “The program helps pregnant and parenting women address their substance abuse struggles, while also learning how to take care of themselves and their children and build stronger bonds with their families.”
“This important federal funding will not only help address a serious health concern, but it will help support families at a crucial time in their lives,” said U.S. Senator Susan Collins. “I applaud the work being done at Crossroads to provide important substance-abuse treatment, prevention, and recovery support services to women and their children here in Maine.”
