Lindsay Lohan is out of rehab again, and she says she is committed to sobriety. Lohan left the Cirque Lodge in Utah this past Friday. Staying sober, and out of Los Angeles, is now Lohan’s main priority. When asked about whether or not she is afraid of a relapse, Lohan responded “Of course I am! If I wasn’t I’d be living in denial. Temptation is always there but now I’ll avoid it the right way.” Lohan is also cutting out the people in her life who encouraged her substance abuse.
Relapse prevention is a key issue for men and women new to recovery. There is some evidence that says about 90% of alcoholics are likely to relapse at least once over the 4-year period following treatment. Though research hasn’t shown any specific intervention that prevents relapse from happening in a predictable manner, there are some things people new to recovery can do to prevent relapse, including:
- Find an AA or NA meeting to attend
- Call a sponsor or a supportive, sober friend when an urge comes
- Stay away from the places you once went to get drunk or high
- Distance yourself from friends that continue to use
- Make a gratitude list
- Find a fun, sober activity to do with friends or family
